GATE 2018 Exam Pattern
There are about 23 papers that GATE conduct and of all those papers, a candidate is allowed to participate in only one of them. The candidate is free to choose the discipline depending upon his future admission prospects. Of those twenty three papers, some of them are Architecture and Planning, Aerospace Engineering (code AE), Biotechnology, Agricultural Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, Civil Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Chemistry, Ecology and Evolution, Electrical Engineering, Solid Mechanics, Engineering Mathematics, Polymer Science and Engineering, Production and Industrial Engineering, Engineering Sciences, Microbiology, Instrumentation Engineering, Food Technology, etc.
The examination papers shall contain some questions on General Aptitude, which are aimed at testing the general aptitude and critical skills of the candidate concerned. These questions shall be in addition to the main subject of the paper. There are other two categories of question papers, XE and XL. The former deals with Engineering Science and comprises subjects like Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Polymer Science and Engineering, Food Technology, etc.A candidate who appears for XE paper will have to attempt questions from three sections namely, Section A, which deals with Engineering Mathematics and it is compulsory to attempt this section; GA, which is General Aptitude and it is also compulsory to attempt this portion; Any two sections from section B to section G.
Candidates who go for XL attempt questions pertaining to different disciplines of Life Sciences. This category comprises subjects like Biochemistry, Zoology, Botany, Food Technology, Chemistry, etc. A Candidate who is appearing for the XL has to attempt from the three sections namely, Section H, which comprises questions from Chemistry and has to be compulsorily attempted; GA, which comprises General Aptitude questions and it has to be compulsorily attempted; and any two sections from section L to Section M.
The examination paper shall be conducted for total three hours and shall contain 65 questions carrying total 100 marks. The pattern would include both Multiple Choice Questions (abbreviated as MCQs) and numerical answer category questions. The examination is conducted online in which the candidates shall be shown questions in a random series on the computer screen. The patterns shall be divided into questions on Recall, Comprehension, Application, and Analysis and Synthesis.
In Recall, the questions are aimed at getting an idea as to how the candidate has understood the principles or laws of the discipline. In Comprehension, the questions are targeting at understanding how well the candidate knows the basics of his subject. In Application, the questions are designed in a manner so as to test the application of knowledge with the help of computation or logical reasoning. Finally in Analysis and Synthesis, the questions pertain to data, images, diagrams, and other graphical representations that require analysis from the candidate before he or he answers the question.
As far as the marking scheme of the paper is concerned, there is one mark awarded for every correct attempt. There is negative marking of 1/3 mark of every wrong answer attempted. Similarly, in case of multiple-choice questions two marks will be awarded for every correct attempt but 2/3 mark will cut on every wrong attempt of questions. There is no negative marks as far as questions that have been left answered are concerned.
