Among the disciplines offered for post-graduate programs, Civil Engineering, which is a main discipline in the undergraduate course, is offered and therefore, GATE Civil Engineering students will have to face an immensely competitive environment. So, here are a few tips that a GATE Civil Engineering candidate should follow to prepare for the examination:
Gulp down the syllabus
The first and foremost thing to be done should be a thorough research on the syllabus. A careful research on the syllabus will apprise the candidate of the subject areas where he needs to give more focus than the others. It will also give a fair idea to the candidate on which books to buy. The syllabus for GATE Civil Engineering covers subjects such as Engineering Mathematics, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Water resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Surveying, and Transportation Engineering. Once you have a fair and clear idea of the syllabus, it is the time that you moved to the next step, which involves a lot of decision-making.
Coaching Institutes, to join or not join?
One of the most fundamental questions is whether to join a coaching institution for preparation. Ideally, a coaching institute should help you further your understanding of concepts and improve your mental skills, however, it is not obligatory to join one. There are, however, a few advantages such as a competitive atmosphere, access to study materials, the supply of mock tests, routine tests and assessments, etc.
Once you have decided whether or not to join a coaching institute, it is the time you drafted an adequately comprehensive timetable. Make sure it is not too strict and is open to flexibility in accordance with the student’s needs. While drawing a timetable, it is suggested that you distribute the time according to your’s and the course’s requirements. Give more time to weak subjects in the first few months of the preparation year and subsequently, make necessary amendments to the schedule.
Mock Papers: Saviours of GATE aspirants
It is absolutely necessary to maintain a good stock of study materials and MOCK TEST PAPERS. This requirement is irrevocable and needs to be observed as a ritual. Mock Test papers are available in bookstores, in coaching institutes, and on online platforms. Coaching-going students should keep a track on every mock test paper they have solved or collected and non-coaching students should buy tests series from bookstores even more. Mock test papers should be routinely solved again and again. No matter how boring the exercise turns out to be, revision of mock test is paramount.
Throughout the preparation year, direct your focus towards understanding concepts and finding solutions. In the last two months, reserve most of the time for revision purposes. A good revision is essential in maintaining in your mind whatever you have learned in the past months. After all, what good would half-baked knowledge do? During this period, practice as many mock tests as possible, consult teachers on loose concepts, engage in competitive environments, and go through guides (available in bookstores).
